Frequently Asked Questions for Pregnant Women Considering Giving Their Baby Up for Adoption

Q: What is adoption?

A: Adoption is a means of meeting the developmental needs of a child by legally transferring ongoing parental responsibilities for that child from birth parents to adoptive parents, recognizing that in the process a new kinship network is created that forever links those two families together through the child who is shared by both.

Q: Is it selfish to want to give my baby up for adoption?

A: No. Through adoption, you offer the baby not only life, but the chance for a good future. You also have to decide what is best for you. Your personal goals, such as school or career pursuits, are important ways of taking care of yourself. There is a difference.

Q: Is giving my baby up for adoption permanent?

A: Yes.

Q: Do I need my parents’ permission to give my baby up for adoption?

A:
No. However, if you are under the age of 18, we strongly encourage you to talk with your parents about your decision. Facing unplanned pregnancy is difficult and we want you to have all the support you need during this time.

Q: If I choose to give my baby up for adoption, who will pay my bills?

A: St. Mary’s will assist you with reasonable pregnancy-related expenses, including medical care, should you need help.

Q: Does the birth father have a say in giving my baby up for adoption?

A: By law, biological fathers have the same rights as birth mothers. When possible, it is important that the birth father be involved in making an adoption plan for the child. St. Mary’s encourages both parties to receive the adoption counseling needed to make the right decision for your child.

Q: Can I have contact with my child after placing him/her for adoption?

A: Yes. At St. Mary’s you can choose to have an open adoption, which means that you and the adoptive family have ongoing contact after the baby is born. The level of openness is up to you and with what you are most comfortable.
