Celebrating Father’s Day

While the holiday could feel complicated this year depending on your situation or relationship with your own dad, you can make the best of the day by choosing a few activities to celebrate important men in your life or your child’s life.

Here are just a few activities that you can use to get the celebration started. Remember to get any kiddos involved during the planning and execution – they love being helpful!

Cast a Line
A wonderful way to spend Father’s Day is to do it unplugged and in nature. Head to your local forest preserve to try your hand at fishing together. Let kids reel in the line or teach them to cast. Smaller kids can play on a blanket with a few favorite toys or toss rocks in the water. Remember, it’s not about catching a lot of fish, but about spending time together doing something different.

Create a Card
Kids love the chance to express themselves with a bit of love and a lot of crayons. Before the big day, have your children make cards for important men in their lives. Dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles, neighbors – everyone can get a specially created card from your kiddos.

Make a Photo Album
With most pictures stored on digital devices, it is a real treat to have an album of photos. Print out favorite photos of Dad in action and create an album or scrapbook of the pics. If you have time, write a caption describing each photo, or simply let the photos speak for themselves.

Hit the Pool
Many community pools offer free admission for Dad on Father’s Day, and if the weather is hot, a family day in the water sounds just right. You can also check for Father’s Day specials at your city’s zoo or other points of interest, then plan your day around that free admission.

Fathers and other important men shape us and love us. Father’s Day is only one day of the year that we can celebrate them. Here’s to Dads everywhere!
